City centre Christmas lights switched on for 2020

The Birmingham city centre Christmas lights have been switched on!

Part-funded by Retail BID, working with Birmingham City Council, the lights make a welcoming and bright impact on the area, in the absence of the Frankfurt Christmas Market.

There are decorative lights on New Street, Lower Temple Street, Cannon Street, High Street, Union Street and Cherry Street, along with a white Christmas Tree in Victoria Square to provide a charming selfie backdrop. The BID’s environmentally-friendly LED tree lights are also up-lighting trees across the city centre to create additional seasonal colour.

Sam Watson, Chair, Retail BID, said: “There might not be as many people in the city centre as usual at the moment but we felt it was right to put the lights on to brighten up the streets in the absence this year of the German Market.

“We hope they will help to make the streets safer on dark nights for those who still live and work in the area as well as providing a sense of optimism that shops will reopen after lockdown is due to end on December 2.”
