Families visiting Dippy the Dinosaur in Birmingham this summer will be able to continue their prehistoric adventure by hunting down the ten eye-catching topiary dinosaurs across the city centre shopping area.
The installation of the Retail BID ‘Big In The City’ Dino Trail will be completed by Thursday, June 7 and the attractions will stay in Birmingham until September to entertain shoppers and tourists of all ages.
A star prize of £500 of shopping vouchers could be won by sharing selfies with all ten of the ornamental reptiles using the hashtag #DippyOnTour and tagging @shoppinginbham in a multiple-image Instagram post. More details and terms and conditions can be found at www.shoppinginbirmingham.com
The dinosaurs can be spotted at popular shopping locations such as Bullring and Grand Central, The Mailbox, John Lewis, New Street, High Street, Corporation Street, Great Western Arcade and Piccadilly Arcade.
Pride of place will be given to a Diplodocus in Victoria Square near Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; the summer home to its more famous namesake.
Each metre-high dinosaur will stand on its own stamped shipping crate and surrounded by seasonal flowers to help enhance its temporary new home.
A special pocket-sized trail map will be distributed across the Midlands to encourage extra city centre visitors and show where each dinosaur is located. The map features interesting facts and figures about the different species on display, including a Velociraptor, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Retail BID, the Business Improvement District for the city centre shopping area, has worked with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Natural History Museum on the Dino Trail, which has been created to celebrate world-famous Dippy the Diplodocus’s stay in the city until September 9, 2018.
Interest in Dippy’s visit has been phenomenal with thousands of free tickets snapped up for its summer-long break in Birmingham.
Dippy’s full skeleton cast in its displayed pose is an impressive 21.3 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high.
Lisa Williams, Head of Branch at John Lewis Birmingham and Retail BID Board Director, said: “The interest in Dippy the Dinosaur’s visit to Birmingham has been incredible and the BID’s Dino Trail is another way of entertaining visitors of all ages who will be making their way to the museum for a family day out.
“With ten topiary dinosaurs on display right across the city centre, this is a great way of showcasing all the great shopping and dining options in Birmingham. I can’t wait to see the dinosaurs released from their shipping crates and families enjoying a prehistoric selfie!”
