Midland Metro Extension
We are currently working with Centro and Balfour Beatty to minimise disruption to all members and have funded new promotional banners to support independent retailers affected by works outside their premises. In addition many SME independently owned businesses have received compensation during this period.
Cofely Heat & Power Pipeworks
The major pipework works currently taking place along New Street and High Street are due to be complete by Summer 2015. When completed the District Heating Scheme being delivered by Cofely and Birmingham City Council Sustainability team will power Grand Central Shopping centre and will offer retailers and businesses in the retail area the opportunity to be connected to the system to reduce energy costs. There have been delays caused on New Street due to unknown utilities and sewers which have been beyond the contractor’s control, however we have been pushing for the issues to be been resolved and work is now back on programme. Retail Birmingham hold regular weekly meetings with the contractors and Birmingham City Council to ensure that work is maintained and disruption to retail BID members is kept to a minimum.
Retail Birmingham are working with Birmingham City Council Regulatory Services, City Centre Centre Management and West Midlands Police with regard to the control of street nuisances, including street preachers, beggars, rough sleepers, peddlars, buskers, illegal street traders and charity street collectors (chuggers). Many of the issues are complex and not covered by current law however current joint working and local resolutions are proving to be successful however we are continuing to investigate the opportunities for appropriate legislation.
Diversions remain in place due to the essential roadworks at Paradise Circus (former Central Library site) and the A38M Aston Expressway/M6 interchange. We continue to liaise with Birmingham City Council and the Highways Agency to minimise disruption and traffic delays for businesses and customers.
