Life-sized Lego Noddy Holder takes centre stage at The Alexandra Theatre

He brought a seasonal smile to thousands of commuters at New Street Station over Christmas, while raising thousands for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.
Now the life-sized Lego brick recreation of Midlands music star Noddy Holder has been relocated to The Alexandra theatre in Birmingham city centre to continue raising funds for sick kids.
With selfie-snappers encouraged to donate to the Children’s Hospital’s ‘Moments of Magic’ campaign, the 42,000-Lego brick statue has so far raised £4,623.
The colourful sculpture was commissioned by Retail BID Birmingham, the Business Improvement District for the city centre retail area. It was built by Bright Bricks, the UK’s only specialist Lego builders, taking 260 hours to complete.
Slade frontman Noddy – best known for writing the Christmas anthem Merry Xmas Everybody – has one of the most recognisable voices in rock music and his ‘It’s Christmas!’ chant has become an instantly recognisable seasonal staple.
The band built a fanbase around the world and became as famous for their flamboyant clothing and live performances as they did their chart-topping singles. Noddy is the proud recipient of an MBE for his services to music.
Passionate about the arts, Noddy, from Walsall, is also a long-time supporter of The Alexandra theatre and became its first patron in 2017. He has his own seat dedicated to him within the theatre.
The star’s Lego-alike is on display in the theatre’s main foyer on Suffolk Street Queensway.
Lisa Mart, Theatre Director at The Alexandra, said: “Noddy has always been a fantastic supporter of our venue and we were delighted when he agreed to become our patron back in 2017, so it makes us incredibly proud to be the natural new home of ‘Lego Noddy’.
“To be able to support this wonderful charity in conjunction with Retail BID is a real pleasure. We think he adds the finishing touch to our newly-refurbished front entrance and that he will give all our customers a lovely surprise as they enter our building.
“Given the generosity of our wonderful audiences in the past, I have no doubt that they will enjoy the opportunity to donate to this fantastic local cause.”
Steve Hewlett, from Retail BID Birmingham, said: “Noddy’s Lego sculpture proved to be really popular at New Street station and it’s wonderful to see how much it raised for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, with lots of people taking photos.
“It’s fantastic that it is now on display at The Alexandra, which is also a member of Retail BID and it will hopefully continue to raise much-needed funds for the hospital.”
Jodie Perkins, from Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Noddy Holder and Retail BID Birmingham for supporting our Moments of Magic campaign over the festive period. The Christmas activity at New Street Station including the Noddy Holder statue raised a fantastic £4,623 in total and this money will go on to make a huge difference to the 90,000 sick kids treated at our hospital every year.
“Whether it’s a ground-breaking piece of medical research, the sound of a patient giggling as they’re entertained at their hospital bed or the sight of them playing in a newly-refurbished playroom, the money donated by our kind-hearted supporters enables us to make sure even more magical moments are spread around our hospital – not just at Christmas, but all year round.
“The much-loved statue has now moved to its new home at The Alexandra theatre, and will still be raising money for our sick kids and their families.”
